Russian Language Test (TRKI) / Russian as a foreign language

State Testing Centre in Moscow TRKI (TORFL) provides examinations in Russian for speakers of other languages.

The TRKI test consists of 2 parts, which are spread between two days. You can take a test at any working day if booked in advance. You have to pay a set fee for taking part in examination.To find out whether you are ready to take an exam for an appropriate level you can arrange a trail test.

TRKI (TORFL) Exam Levels

  • Elementary:
  • Passing Elementary level test indicates that candidates gained a minimal level of communication skills enough to meet minimal requirements for everyday communication.

  • Test of Russian as a foreign language. Basic level (TORFL-0):
  • Successful performance in Basic level test indicates that candidates have communication skills enough to meet minimal requirements in social and cultural communication.

  • Test of Russian as a foreign language. Level 1 (TORFL-1). First Certificate Level.
  • Successful performance at First Certificate level indicates that a candidate gained communication skills at the level which is sufficient for meting the requirements for successful communication in social, cultural, educational, professional spheres. The First Certificate is an official document, which allows foreign citizens to enter the Russian University.

  • Test of Russian as a foreign language. Level 2 (TORFL-2).
  • Successful performance at this level indicates and advanced level of competence in Russian. Successful candidates can deal with material which is cognitively demanding and use language to good effect. This Certificate is required for studying at Russian Universities. It’s also needed when obtaining a bachelor`s and master`s degree in Russia (excluding degree in philology).

    Preparation for TRKI Test Russian as a foreign language

    First day of the examination:

  • 1st Part. Vocabulary. Grammar. To test an ability to use the cases, declensional endings, verbal forms in the defined context, including infinitival constructions. All the tasks will test the vocabulary minimum for an appropriate level.
  • 2nd Part. Reading. To test an ability to understand the described situation. The size of the text is min 500 words. Tasks with multiple choices are used. Texts are using vocabulary and grammar material for an appropriate level.
  • 3rd Part. Writing
  • Second day of the examination:

  • 4th Part. Listening. To check the ability of the candidate to understand the topic introduced in the recording.
  • 5th Part. Speaking. The aim of the test is to define the level of speaking skills.
  • Certificate in Russian as a foreign language needed if you're planning:
